Staycation or Vacation...or why not both? Part 1-The Staycation

Hello and welcome to Sunday afternoon.  Right now I'm enjoying some quiet time at home while the girls nap.  It's peaceful and the perfect time to sit down and share some thoughts.

Oh what a week we have had!  This week, I've been on vacation from work.   Usually that means an entire week full of adventures somewhere far away from home.  But this week, as much as I would have liked to spend a week away, I decided it just wasn't smart right now.  I've got a big trip coming in October, and with vet bills and some other issues recently, I need to be a little more frugal with my money.  Generally I'd think I was just wasting my vacation days by not using them to go somewhere, but I was actually looking forward to saving some money and having some adventures a little closer to home for a few days.

So with no firm plans, we started our vacation week wondering what we should do first.  After a little research, I decided that on Sunday, we'd jump in the car and head about 45 minutes southeast to Brighton.  There are several State Parks close by with hiking trails, lakes, and geocaching opportunities and this sounded like a great way to spend our day.

Our first stop of the day was the Island Lake State Recreation area.  It is a beautiful wooded area with lots of hiking and biking paths and it was our first stop as we began to work toward the goal of visiting all of Michigan State Parks. We received our first official stamp in our State Park book, and I am excited to be starting this new adventure.

We arrived mid-afternoon with plans to check out some hiking trails and just see what we could find.  It was warm and humid, a combination that limits how far I can walk with Maddie, but I decided that we'd just go until she told me she was ready to stop.  So with my backpack packed with her water supply and a few other necessities, we were off to explore.

We followed the Yellow trail as it meandered through the woods to the Huron River.  When we got to the river, the girls got in for a little splashing around, and I could tell that Maddie was ready to head back to the car.  It was a busy Sunday afternoon with lots of bikers out on the trail, and the girls received lots of love from people as they passed us.  While it was a fairly short hike, Maddie was pooped when we got back to the Jeep.  That helped determine the next stop on our journey for the day.

For our second stop, we headed a little farther down the road to South Lyon to visit the Michigan War Dog Memorial.  I had read an article about this place earlier this summer and just knew I needed to visit.  What a beautiful memorial to the dogs who have spent their lives serving our country with the military.

There were memorials for each of the wars that the U.S has fought in since World War II, but the Vietnam War Memorial Wall was probably the one I found the most moving.

What a special place to keep alive the memory of these special animals.  If you're ever in the area, you should definitely check it out for yourself.

We awoke on Monday with big plans for the day.  First, Maddie had a vet appointment first thing in the morning for her sixth Adequan injection.  Once the appointment was done, I had planned to come home, get Peaches in the car, and head out for more State Park adventures.  However, the universe had other plans for me!

We arrived home from Maddie's appointment and I was quickly finishing up a couple of items around the house when I noticed a stray dog wandering between two of my neighbor's houses.  He was slowly meandering back and forth across the street.  He had a collar and looked like he had probably been chained outside and gotten loose.  I didn't want to see him wander off and get hurt, so I went out to see if I could coax him into my backyard.  However, each time I would go outside, he would disappear into someone's backyard.  I had almost given up hope of catching him when I looked outside and saw him standing in the neighbor's front yard with a woman.  While my first thought was that maybe he was her dog, I quickly discovered that was not the case.

With her help, I was able to convince him to come hang out in my backyard.   He had no ID tags and I had never seen him around the neighborhood, and it was clear that there was no one out looking for him at that point, so I called our friends at Ingham County Animal Control.  There was not an officer immediately available to come help and I was nervous about leaving him alone in my backyard while I wasn't home, so I loaded him up in the Jeep and headed to Mason.  He was such a sweet boy and gave me kisses all the way there.

Once he was safe and sound at the shelter, I headed back home and got the girls so we could finally head out for our day's adventures.  Peaches best bud, Bentley joined us for the fun for the day as well.  We once again headed toward Brighton for our first stop of the day-the Brighton State Recreation area.  It was warm and sunny and the perfect day to be outside.  Just like the day before, this park has both hiking and biking trails, but with three dogs in tow, I decided to avoid the joint use trails and focus on the short hiking loop around Bishop Lake.

With the humidity, it was once again a little slow going with Maddie, but with the lake nearby, we were able to stop at a couple of spots and everyone could get into the water to cool off and maybe even enjoy a swim.

After a few hours there, we were ready to head out and explore our next stop, the Pinckney State Recreation Area.  We stopped to have our book stamped at the headquarters and discussed with the nice lady there some of our trail choices.  With the knowledge she had provided, I picked a trail that I thought would be perfect.  We parked and were off on our hike.

Suddenly, less than a half mile into our hike.  Peaches stopped, leaned forward, and then jumped back quickly.  I wasn't sure what would make her do that and then I saw it...our newest friend, the snapping turtle.  Maddie completely ignored him, however, Peaches and Bentley were in an intense stare-down with him and then begun to bark and lunge.  I tried to figure out a way to get around him or get him to move, yet nothing could convince him to move.  He had found the perfect little sunny spot in the trail and that is where he was going to stay.  While he was small, I was sure that he could still hurt someone and there was no getting passed him with the two crazy barkers, so I made the executive decision to turn around and find a new trail to hike.

We headed in the opposite direction and found a new trail head and had an enjoyable hike the rest of the time we were there.

It was now early evening and we had one more stop to make on our way home, the Mike Levine Lakelands Trail State Park.  This is a multi-use linear trail, which means it is open to hikers, bikers, and horses, that has recently been added as a State Park.  It follows an old abandoned railroad corridor and it was right on our way home so it just made sense to make a stop.

As I was getting the dogs out of the Jeep, a nice gentleman in the car parked next to us started to ask me about the dogs.  He had just finished a 20 mile bike ride along the trail that day and was resting when we arrived.  We had a nice conversation about the girls, our goal of visiting all of the Michigan State parks, Maddie and Imke's travels with me to 49 States, and my plans on finishing State 50.  We enjoyed our conversation and he wished me luck in completing my travels and with the girls continuing to live life to the fullest.

And then we were off!  I knew we'd be lucky to even make it a mile with Maddie at this point, but she was plugging along and seemed to be enjoying the hike.  We walked one and a quarter miles and picked up a couple of geocaches along the way and as we reached the Jeep, Maddie headed right for it, ready to go!  We had checked three State parks off of our list, but more importantly, we'd had a great day exploring some new places in our beautiful State.

On Tuesday, we spent a quiet morning at home enjoying some time outside, but by mid-day, we were all ready for another adventure.  I decided we would head to Albion to do a little hiking on the North Country trail there.  This is the closest part of the trail to us and we frequently hike in this area because it is close to home.

On this day, I decided to park in a different area and hike part of the trail that we don't travel as much, just to give the girls a change of pace.  After about three-quarters of a mile, we turned and headed back to the Jeep because the heat and humidity were getting to be too much for Maddie.  At this point I then drove them over to Victory Park where we could walk along the River and spend some time in the water.

Once we got parked, I allowed them to splash around a bit and then we continued our walk through the park.  We turned around to head back toward the Jeep and stopped along the river one more time.  It was so peaceful that I decided to sit down and stick my feet in for a bit too.  Maddie laid down for a nap as Peaches continued to run around and explore and occasionally jump into the river for a cool down.  I really enjoyed this afternoon because we were able to get in a nice 2.2 mile walk and also enjoy some down time together.

Finally, it was time to head home.  I could see that the storms were starting to move our way and I wanted to do a little geocaching along our drive home.  I found several caches and had a scenic drive down some country dirt roads...I even had a nice old man pull over to make sure that everything was okay when he saw me alone and outside of my parked Jeep on the side of one country road.    I couldn't tell him why I was really stopped, but we had a nice conversation...of course he was admiring the girls and mentioned that he had a GSP mix at home.  After a brief conversation, we continued on our journey and made it home just as the storms began.  It had been another successful day on our staycation.

I really enjoyed all of our adventures close to home, but there was something missing from this vacation, and I couldn't ignore that voice telling me that I needed to head North for some time along Lake Superior.  So it was decided-Wednesday we would be heading out for a U.P. Summer adventure.  I went to bed Tuesday night packed and ready to head North.

Local adventures and a little mom and Maddie time

Last week we had a really great time continuing to enjoy our beautiful Michigan Summer.  It's continued to be hot and humid, and while that makes longer adventures more difficult, especially with Maddie, we aren't letting that stop us from getting out and making the most of our time together.

Last Monday,  we made a trip out to our friends at Patterson Veterinary Hospital for the fifth of Maddie's initial six weekly Adequan injections.  The previous two weeks we had brought Peaches along and then spent some time on different sections of the Hayhoe Trail after the appointment.  This week I decided to leave Peaches home and spend a little one on one time with Maddie.

We were done and on our way quickly and I'm not sure much else could have made Maddie any happier than getting out of that place!  Since she was such a good girl and has been a trooper on her weekly visits, I decided to head to another section of the Hayhoe trail for a bit of  a walk.  With air that felt as thick as soup due to the humidity, we didn't get very far, but it sure was nice to take a quiet and leisurely stroll with my sweet old girl.  My walks with her when it's just the two of us have become extra special to me and I so enjoyed this little bit of time with her.

Tuesday night the girls and I headed out not long before sunset for a nice walk and some geocaching at Moore's Park.  It had been a long day and a nice walk was just what I needed.  As we were returning to the Jeep at the end of our walk, I was able to capture a couple of pictures which have quickly become some of my all time favorites.

There is just something extra special about the sun setting over water...and it's even better with a dog!

Wednesday evening started out as it typically does with me at the Shelter for our Wednesday night Dog Walking Club.  But I was excited to have some big plans after dog walking- a fun night at the Dog Days of Summer at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The Lansing Lugnuts have done dog friendly events for years, and I would occasionally take Imke to a game with me.  But I had never taken Maddie and I was really excited to share this experience with her.

It was her first game and she was such a good girl.  She made lots of friends of both the two- and four-legged variety, we walked several laps around the stadium, we enjoyed some time in the lawn, and we shared some nachos.

I received  so many compliments on what a good girl she was and I don't think I could have been any more proud of her.  It was such a good night and I really loved my mom and Maddie time.  I'm hoping to have more opportunities for some  quality one one one time with her again soon!

Friday night  we kicked off our Summer vacation at home with a walk at a park we had never been to before.   It was humid and a storm was moving our way, so we had a quick walk before heading toward home for the night.

We also enjoyed a walk around downtown and a stop at our favorite Mexican restaurant  over the weekend.  Sometimes a few days close to home with nothing much to do is just what you need to relax and recharge.

Peaches has that relaxing thing down to a science!

We've been busy over the last few days enjoying a little time off from work and no real obligations.  I'll share more of our adventures closer to home with you later this week. We've got lots to share, but for now I'll say good night.

The Sting

Hello, friends!  Hope your week is starting off well.  We have reached the middle of the Summer season here in Michigan and are now working our way toward Fall.  As the days get shorter, I try to focus on the good things still to come in our much-too-short Summer season here.  The temperatures have been in the 80s with fairly high humidity still, and while I'd prefer a little less humid weather, I'm not complaining!  Any day I can wear shorts and flip-flops is a good day in my world!

Over the last couple of weeks, the girls and I have spent some time out exploring some new areas closer to home.  We haven't had a chance to take any big Summer adventures, and the same walking route around our neighborhood is getting a lot less interesting to us all, so I'm using my new-found interest in geocaching to locate some new parks and trails in the Lansing area to get us out exploring.  It's definitely brought us some interesting adventures!

Maddie has had weekly appointments at the Vet for her Adequan injections over the last few weeks, so we have used these trips to Mason to spend some time on the Hayhoe trail.  We bring Peaches along so that all of our friends at Patterson's can give both girls some love, and then after Maddie's appointment is done, we head out on the trail which is just a short distance away.   Not only have we found some new areas to explore, but we also had a chance to stop and appreciate the Veteran's Memorial in downtown Mason.  I've driven by this many times, but never stopped.  What a cool memorial!

On Thursday, we headed out to explore the trails near the MSU Federal Credit Union main branch  These trails are nicely paved, but not well known, so they don't get very busy.  For me, those are great places to explore with the dogs.

We brought Bentley along for our adventure on this night and we had no idea what was in store for us.  We parked the Jeep and headed down the trail toward our first geocache of the day.  Peaches was happily bounding through the grass on the sides of the trail, Bentley happily walking along in front of me on the trail, and Maddie plodding along at my side.  As we neared our first cache, we had to go off the trail to find it.  Peaches leapt joyfully forward in the tall grass, leaping and then rolling, two of her favorite things to do.  I was watching my footing and helping Maddie along, while trying to convince Bentley it was okay to leave the trail, when I noticed Peaches leap into the air to catch a bug and then furiously begin to shake her head.  She dropped to roll on the ground again, and that is when I noticed another bug flying toward me...and I realized it wasn't a bug at all, but a wasp!

In her enthusiasm, Peaches had landed on and disturbed a wasps nest and they were slowly beginning to come out after us.  I quickly started to back out of the grass, and was stung in my side.  I was dragging the girls out of there as quickly as I could, but Peaches was stung a couple more times, and with each sting, she just wanted to roll in the grass to make it stop hurting!  But somehow I convinced her she needed to get up and out of there.

Meanwhile, poor Maddie had been stung, then got tangled in her leash, and fell over.  She was writhing in the grass, near the edge of the path, but struggling to stand on her own.  Finally I was able to calm her down a bit, get her untangled, and get her standing, but when we started to walk, she was wobbly on her feet and fell over.  I began to panic, wondering if she was having an allergic reaction to her stings and, not knowing what else to do, I picked her up (all 67.8 pounds of her!) and began to carry her over my shoulder toward the Jeep.  At this point, I was unable to pick up leashes for Bentley and Peaches, but I was so proud of the two of them as they stayed close by, right in front of me on the path as I continued to walk toward the Jeep.

Finally, after what seemed like forever, but was probably less than 100 yards, I reached a bench were I could put Maddie down and check to see how she was doing.  Thankfully she was able to stand and walk on her own again, and although she was still panting pretty heavily and her heart was racing, I determined that she wasn't having an allergic reaction, but instead, most likely, had just had a good scare and worked herself up when she got tangled.  So after a short break, we were all back on the path walking back toward the Jeep so that I could get everyone a drink and decide what we would do next.

While Maddie had given me quite the scare, after a little rest and a drink, she seemed to be back to her normal self, and so we decided to continue our walk-heading in a different direction!

The rest of our walk was enjoyable and uneventful, and we all had a great time spending some time together.  I was even able to get everyone to pose for a picture for me!  After a crazy and eventful trip, we headed home tired and happy!

On Sunday, we were back out on the North Country Trail working toward our 100 miles for the year.

We visited the section of the trail just outside of Battle Creek at Kimball Pines.  This part of the trail was new for us and I was happy to be out getting some time on the trail with the girls.  The weather was hotter than I expected, and this part of the trail wasn't very well shaded, so we had to cut our hike a little short because it was just too hot for Maddie.  So after 1.4 miles, we were back in the Jeep with the air conditioning cranked to help Maddie cool down.

Next we headed to Historic Bridges Park, just a short drive from Kimball Pines.  After a little rest and some time to cool down in the air conditioning, I thought we could get in a little more time on the trail, but first the girls took some time to splash around in the river.

We enjoyed a slow and relaxing one mile walk around Historic Bridges Park and one last splash in the River before heading home.  It had been a nice relaxing day out and about with the girls.  It was just the kind of Sunday I needed!

I think Maddie was pretty happy with the day as well!  After a fun week of exploring, there's nothing better than spending a little quiet time in the sun in your own backyard on a Sunday afternoon!
