Stay Home. Stay Safe. Tales from Quarantine: Episode 1

Hello everyone!  We have made it through another week, my third working from home and keeping isolated.  Our lives have changed drastically.  Things that we never would have thought of saying just a few weeks ago have now become part of our daily vocabulary.  We continue to talk about social distancing, but I read something earlier this week that made a lot more sense to me.  What we truly need during this time is social connection while keeping our physical distance from others.

While staying home can be difficult, we live in a world which enables us to stay connected in so many ways.  We really are lucky to have so many options.  It is important to take advantage of all of the opportunities we have to keep in touch.  My hope is to use this blog as a means not only to document this historic time in our lives, but also as a way to share, to connect, and maybe even to rejoice in all of the blessings of life.  And hopefully you'll even find a reason to laugh.  The best thing we can do during this time is to share with others and know that we are not alone.

You may recall that earlier this year I set several goals for myself-my 20 for 2020.  Given all that is going on in the world currently, I am definitely going to have to adjust some of those goal, but it doesn't mean we're giving up on them or that I can't make some new ones.  And that's exactly what I've been doing.

Since January, we've been working on hiking 100 miles on the North Country Trail again this year.  When the year started, I decided to set a smaller goal of reaching our first 50 miles by May 1st.  Maddie thrives in cooler weather and snow, so I was going to make the most of it.  We were lucky to have great weather this Winter which allowed us to get out more and really make great progress, in fact, we made such good progress that we were able to reach our first 50 miles by April 1st.  I was pretty proud of that accomplishment.

Unfortunately, with our current state of affairs, our ability to continue hiking on the trail is limited as we try to stay closer to home.  Luckily for us, the North Country Trail Association has decided to change the Hike 100 challenge this year to adapt to our current reality, and they have decided to allow any miles we walk in the month of April to count toward our 100.

With that change, I decided that we would challenge ourselves to complete our remaining 50 miles this month.  In addition, I'm planning to walk an additional 50 miles this month with just Peaches for a total of 100 Hike from Home miles.  I am hoping that we'll be able to get back on the trail this Fall and complete another 50 miles on the trail, but until we can get back out on the trail, we're going to make the most of what we can do close to home. As of today, Maddie has 14 miles for the month of April, and Peaches and I have 22 miles.  I'm pleased with this start.

In addition, I've been trying to find ways to maintain connection with friends both near and far.  Luckily, my employer offers us some pretty cool options through a program called Health Matters.  This program allows us to choose activities to earn points which translate into gift cards.  We have options to do individual activities, but there are also team activities available.  I'm currently taking part in two team activities, one is a 1 million step challenge and the other is a plank challenge.  It's a great way to stay connected in a fun and challenging way.  Plus it's great for my health!  The step challenge will be easy, but wish me luck with the plank challenge.  It's definitely going to be a challenge!  But I am pretty lucky to have my furry cheerleaders here cheering me on every day.

I've also decided to take part in #the100DayProject.  The goal of this project is to participate in a creative project every day for a 100 days.  I've decided to use this time to start writing my book about traveling to all 50 states and the State Capitols with Imke and Maddie.  I'm dedicating 15 minutes each day to writing, and I'm looking forward to connecting with others who are also taking part in this project.

As we continue to navigate through our daily lives, I hope that you are finding ways to challenge yourselves and to keep yourselves happy and healthy and safe.  I also hope you are finding ways to keep yourself connected to family and friends.  Because in this time of staying away from others, it is more important than ever to remain connected.
