Douglas Island

Today we slowed down a bit and relaxed.  After being so busy, it was nice to sleep in and take some time to do nothing.  I took the dogs for a nice walk around the neighborhood and got back in time to heat up some leftovers for lunch.  I had some scraps left so I headed out to visit the chickens that live at our Airbnb.  They are very friendly and enjoyed the rice that I shared with them.

After finishing lunch, we got ready to head out to explore Douglas Island.  There is one bridge across the chanel from Juneau that leads to the island and we wanted to see what was there to explore.  We grabbed some snacks and went for a drive.

Our first stop was Sandy Beach and the Treadwell Gold Mine Trail.  This beach leads to a trail that explains the history of the Treadwell Gold Mine.  This was a hugely profitable mine in its day.

While we were there we saw several mining relics, some eagles and other birds, and some beautiful views.

We had a marvelous walk and the girls really enjoyed the time we spent there.  It was a great place to spend some time and enjoy a little history of the area.

We then continued to explore the island further.  On our drive, we discovered a great view of Mendenhall Glacier.

We also discovered the False Outer Beach, which we've been told is a great place to go tide pooling.  We were there at high tide, though, so we didn't get a chance to explore the tide pools, but it is a beautiful beach with a great view.

As we were leaving the island, we saw this very interesting wall made of skis.  It was pretty cool and had to have taken a lot of work to complete!

To end our day, we took a walk on the Sea Walk.  It was a peaceful night for a walk.  We even found the Humpback whale sculpture which was recently added to the walk.  The ravens were testing Peaches and she was having the best time!

Then it was back in the Jeep to head home for dinner.  It was another great day in Alaska
